Cliff Richard - Music In Review DVD
I decided to rent this DVD after watching Disc 1, which although it had some inaccuracies, was on the whole enjoyable, especially the early black and white images of Cliff and the Shadows on stage. Unfortunately the second disc I found to be poor in many respects, I have been a fan of Cliff and the Shadows for many years and over that time have amassed a fair degree of knowledge about both acts. I really don’t expect the ‘expert’ reviewers to puryey information that is actually incorrect. Here are some examples: when talking about the film ‘Summer Holiday‘ reference was made to the Shadows tune ‘Foot Tapper’ and then we were treated to a clip from the film, however, dispite the title on the screen informing the viewer they were watching that number, the Shads were actually playing ‘Round and Round’ I believe! An inference was made that Cliff and Bruce Welch wrote the title song for Summer Holiday when in fact it was written by Brian Bennett and Bruce Welch as was stated in the title credits on screen. In the section dealing with The Shadow career it was stated that ‘The Tornados’ pre dated the Shadows, I feel this also is untrue, certainly the Tornados first hit was in 1962, some time after the Shadows arrived on the scene. Before this turns into a rant I’ll move on to the production aspects of the DVD, the reviewers often repeated the same information to the viewer so the same detail was repeated a number of times. A technique of dividing the screen into two windows was frequently employed, one window showing the reviewer and the other showing archive footage. Personally I would have prefferred alot more of the artists and less of the reviewers! In summary a very dissapointing DVD, the old footage, although very poor quality, is a great reminder of Cliffs performances over the years but you have to weigh this against some uninformed comments from the pundits and overall poor production values.
