Secret Window DVD

I got the impression watching this film that Johnny Depp was basically having a laugh and not really stretching himself such is the talent of the man! And as will all Stephen King adaptations (The Shining excluded) it doesn’t quite hit the mark. Depp plays Morton Rainey, a crime/horror writer who is going through a traumatic divorce whilst trying to write a new book. He is suddenley accused by a stranger (the very creepy John Turtouro) that he has stolen his story and wants justice. The feud begins to turn nasty as dead bodies start turning up and Morton’s life gets torn apart bit by bit. But things are not what they seem and the stranger is revealed for who he truly is. Although this had a fairly large cinema release, it has the distinct air of a TV movie, emphasised by the presence of Timothy Hutton, who has been much used in King TV movies. The film is besically ok and there’s an unpredictable twist at the end. Depp is Depp and towards the end is clearly enjoying himself too much and some of his assured acting flies out of the window. The film is fairly short and perfectly adequate for a quiet night in when there’sa nothing on the box.
